Suggestions anybody?

I'm looking for kid-friendly vacation ideas. Somewhere in the northeast U.S. We don't want to go far, but we don't know what the kids might be able to enjoy or at least not be a problem at so I'm asking other moms/dads what they think! The girls will be two in May. We wouldn't go anywhere immediately, so we have time to figure it out. I was thinking of going to Pennsylvania, my grandparents used to take us when we were younger to Amish country. But I don't know what there is to DO there other than...uh...look around? We can't afford a big trip or any big amusement parks either.

Is it too early for a zoo of some sort? Is the beach a good/bad idea? Would it be inappropriate to take toddlers to a battlefield park, i.e. Gettysburg? What do you think? If anyone is still reading this, that is!!!

Thanks in advance!

I don't know the northeast at all, but can tell you that zoos, parks, and the beach are all great. I take my kids to the zoo all the time. They love it, but they really don't look at the animals. They love the play center, which has crafts, small mammals, and a greenhouse where the kids can take spray bottles and spray the plants with water. There is also a jungle gym at our zoo and we spend a lot of time there. I also take them to the lake shore (I'm in Chicago, so we have Lake Michigan) and let them run around and play in the sand. Off season is great because it isn't crowded at all. Even in season its fun. We don't swim in the lake very often because I'm paranoid about pollution, but its still a lot of fun. I avoid amusement parks like the plague. My kids would love to go, but I'd be frantic trying to keep them all together. Plus, they only like the atmosphere of amusement parks; they won't go on any of the rides. I don't know about battlefield parks. I don't see why it would be bad or inappropriate to take them there, though. I take my kids to the cemetery when I visit my grandma's and my brother's graves and they have a good time there. I clean up the grave sites and the kids walk around and play. I suppose it would be a similar experience at a battlefield site. My husband and I don't really do much when we vacation (at least not anymore! lol!). We just rent a house at the beach or we go to my dad's lake house. Our kids just want to play freely outside, so we don't plan anything structured yet. Renting a house on the beach in florida is rather inexpensive now that the economy is in the toilet....

Arizona pretty much said all I have to say. My girls have loved the beach ever since they could walk. It is so fun and cheap. Zoos are amazing. My girls love anything that is outside so a battlefield sounds awesome. Any cool parks or botanical gardens are always great. You will be surprised at how much fun you can have really just doing very little. Kids are easily amused with any new environment. Even camping is super fun for them. :)

Have a great tine whatever you decide :)

Here's a suggestion...

My husband and I are planning a trip to Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas with our kids. Its a state park (state parks = cheap!) and you go and dig in a huge crater and any diamonds you find you can keep. It sounds like great fun and our kids love nothing more than digging and getting dirty. We're going in our RV. Its a small RV so it may not be all that much fun at times! lol! But its an inexpensive vacation that is outdoors, fun, and possibly financially rewarding. If you find a good diamond, that is!
